[Edited August 8, 2023: Congrats to the Portfolio Showcase winners! See details in our Awards and Wrap Up post. You can also see a round-up summary of all of Team Blog's SCBWI Summer Conference posts, with links.]
The SCBWI Summer Conference Portfolio Showcase is now open for public viewing! Even if you're not an illustrator, I encourage you to browse the amazing art, which will be on display until September 10th. You can also show your support for your fellow creators by helping to promote the Showcase in your social media (be sure to include the conference hashtag #scbwiSummer23). Gentle reminder: Never share an illustrator's art online unless you have their permission, especially if the image you're sharing does not have their info included.
SCBWI Design and Illustration Manager TeMika Grooms was kind enough to answer a few questions for me.
Q. What was your role in this year's Portfolio Showcase?
As the SCBWI Design and Illustration Manager, one of my responsibilities includes logistical planning and implementation of the bi-annual Portfolio Showcases. It brings me great joy to see the art that SCBWI illustrators are developing for their portfolios. Many of the submissions demonstrated a unique visual storytelling, technical skill, and distinct personality in the art style presented. I'm looking forward to seeing the next batch of artists in-person at the New York Winter Conference in 2024.
Q. Who were the judges for this year's Showcase?
"Many thanks to our judges Lauren Rille (Art Director, Simon & Schuster) and Karina Granda (Art Director, Little Brown Books for Young Readers) who reviewed 104 portfolios submitted from illustrators worldwide. Each participant was required to submit 3 images for review by our judges. The judges enjoyed seeing the wide variety of art made by SCBWI's illustration members to narrow the selection down to this year's winners. This is a valuable opportunity to have artwork viewed and discussed by children's book art directors."
