Recipe for Success in 2022 from an Art Director’s Point of View: Kristen Nobles, Charlesbridge #SCBWIWinter22

Kirsten's overview of Charlesbridge Publishing:

Kirsten’s recipe for success:

-Develop strong characters in your portfolio— animals and humans of every age, skin tone with a variety of expressions.

-Illuminate your subject matter by communicating clearly. Bring glory to a text! For example, the illustrations in MOVING WORDS ABOUT A FLOWER, illustrated by Barbara Chotiner.

-Create visual depth to enhance the written story. Remember, the illustrations need to extend the text, to bring more information. For example, with EVERYONE SHARES (EXCEPT CAT), illustrated by Katie Mazeika, the illustrated created characters with distinctive personalities messy mouths—things children will relate to. Put more subtext into the simplest of stories.

-Use evocative imagery.

Infuse your art with emotion. For example, with THE PENGUIN OF THE ILHA GRANDE, illustrated by Renato Alarcão—the image is breathtaking! Perspective adds atmosphere, as well as the chaotic water.

-Make sure your portfolio is filled with images highlighting your unique personality. For example, if you have a humorous personality, try to include humorous imagery in your work.

Myth busting tip:

You don't have to draw cute cuddly animals to get published. Be true to yourself and your style.
