SCBWI Winter Conference Portfolio Showcase: Behind The Scenes (with input from Priscilla Burris and Sarah Baker)

The SCBWI Winter Conference Portfolio Showcase is now open for viewing! Even if you're not an illustrator, I encourage you to go browse some of the amazing art. You can also show your support for your fellow creators by helping to promote this showcase in your social media! Be sure to use the conference hashtag #scbwiWinter22. Gentle reminder: Never share an illustrator's art online unless you have their permission, especially if the image you're sharing does not have their info included.

And speaking of illustrators, isn't Claudia Ravalli's art for the conference header fabulous?

If you're participating in this year's Showcase: CONGRATS for putting yourself out there, whether or not you end up winning a prize. Putting together a portfolio can be a valuable learning experience. Find inspiration from other creatives as you browse portfolios. Many, MANY publishing professionals will be seeing your work. Also, Sarah Baker keeps a record of the illustrators who participate in Showcases and refers to the list throughout the year when she's looking for members to do SCBWI-commissioned work.

Portfolio showcase crowd from LA, year unknown.

As much as we all miss seeing each other in person, there are silver linings of a virtual Portfolio Showcase, including:

-  More illustrators have been able to participate from around the globe. 15 countries are represented in the Showcase this year, with 241 portfolios!

- One of the silver linings of a virtual conference: more time to browse attendee art between sessions! Agents, art directors and editors are already doing this, but I also encourage the rest of you to check out the fantastic art in the SCBWI Virtual Portfolio Showcase.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Curious about what goes on behind the scenes at the Portfolio Showcase? I recently found out more from Priscilla Burris, who is SCBWI's Illustrator Programs Consultant, Portfolio Showcase Director, and Advisory Council Member, and Sarah Baker, SCBWI Executive Director.

Q. Who are the people behind the Portfolio Showcase?

Priscilla Burris told me she is just one of several who work on the Portfolio Showcase. From Priscilla: "My role is to invite/gather the Portfolio Judges, and once they are confirmed, there is the process of providing time for them to privately view the portfolios in the showcase.  Virtually, Sarah [Baker] and I meet with the Judges as they discuss and select the Award Winners."

From Sarah Baker: "I’m involved with planning and decision making with Priscilla. Kim Turrisi is involved as Director of Programming, and Laurie Miller with logistics as Conference Coordinator. Josh Smith does the programming, Avery Silverberg, our new Social Media Manager, promotes the showcase online, and Chelsea Kimiko Hall answers lots of questions! It’s a team effort!"

Priscilla adds, “In-person Portfolio Showcases involve many to help with all the physical prepping, setting up, overseeing, and post-Showcase responsibilities. Our hard-working Regional Team members fill these vital roles.”

"Every Portfolio Showcase sees a different group of diverse judges, never the same group. This provides a variety of perspectives and experiences."

Comment from Sarah Baker about the photo above: "My children’s book education started years before that photo when I started coming to conferences and helping Priscilla and the RTs set up the portfolio showcase. Then in 2011 I actually started working for SCBWI, and it was incredible to feel so welcomed by everyone. Getting to work with Priscilla on the showcases is one of the absolutely most fun and rewarding parts of working at SCBWI."

Q. What is the history behind the SCBWI Portfolio Showcase?

Once known as the Portfolio Display (early 1990s) held at the annual Summer Conference, it looked quite different than what the Portfolio Showcase is today.  Back then, participating illustrators set up their own portfolios on provided tables and were present during the event.

Having the illustrators there in person during the viewing, though, often made it awkward for those browsing portfolios. With the goal of showcasing portfolios to the intended audience (editors, art directors, book designers, and agents), Priscilla and other organizers adopted a new strategy by providing a distinctively professional, private setting. "Specific guidelines and directions were created which included dropping off portfolios, which were then set up for a private viewing, without illustrators having to be present. This change was highly beneficial for both our illustrator members as well as publishing professionals seeking new talent."

Priscilla is grateful to both Frieda Gates (NYC) and Francesca Rusackas (RAE SoCal) for the part they each played in helping with this transformation.

Q. How are portfolios judged?

From Priscilla Burris: "Portfolios are judged as a whole and overall for content appropriate for children’s books, and each Portfolio Showcase brings in different Portfolio Judges with a wide range of perspectives which creates interesting discussions when making the Award decisions. That being said, all are looking for fresh artistic voices, authentic and unique characters, narrative quality and storytelling strengths, consistency throughout, great expressions and emotions, compelling and impactful compositions, well thought out details, sometimes hidden elements, and often to consider how the illustrator self-edits each image."

Looking for more tips about SCBWI Portfolio Showcases? See KidLitArtists, an unofficial blog put together by some of SCBWI Illustration Mentees (past and present) which includes portfolio advice from past Showcase winners.

Q. Any final words for those who participate in the SCBWI Portfolio Showcase?

From Priscilla Burris: "Each participant is to be congratulated for taking this professional step forward in their career.  While each group of Portfolio Judges’ task is to select the Award Winning Portfolios, the best part of all is that each and every image in each portfolio is seen by professionals in the children’s book industry."

"The Portfolio Showcase has become the launching pad for many illustrator careers. There have been marvelous successes soon following the Award Winners being announced, as well as new talents discovered at the same event.  Then, there are exciting successes we hear about that have happened months and sometimes years later. Our Portfolio Showcase ‘audience’ takes note of specific portfolio interests purposefully, and when a particular project comes up that is a great match for an illustrator of interest, well, as the saying goes, the rest is history."

"So, whether at an in-person or a virtual conference, having your illustrations showcased in this manner is one of the best ways to progress in your career as a children’s book illustrator."

Thanks to Priscilla Burris and Sarah Baker for their help with this post.

Three Reasons Why You Should Check Out The Portfolio Showcase (Even If You're Not An Illustrator) #scbwiSummer22

The SCBWI Summer Conference Portfolio Showcase is now open for viewing! Even if you aren't an illustrator, I encourage you to go check out the amazing art.

According to Priscilla Burris, SCBWI's Illustrator Programs Consultant, Portfolio Showcase Director, and Advisory Council Member, there are 218 portfolios registered in the Showcase this year. Eleven (11) countries outside the U.S. are represented, including Australia, India, South Africa and Germany!

This year, participating illustrators were asked to indicate whether they were agented or unagented. Two (yes, I said TWO!) Grand Prize winners will be selected - one agented and one unagented. TWO Honor winners will be selected - again, one agented and one unagented. From Priscilla, on this exciting change: "We want to provide a space for participants who are serious about seeking representation. Every portfolio is given this opportunity but an award highlights this possibility." In addition to the Showcase awards, The Ezra Jack Keats Showcase Award For Illustration will be given to a promising BIPOC artist who has never been published. participants have this option when registering.

The Showcase winners and Honor recipients will be announced live on Zoom on Saturday, August 6th at 9 am PST, and the winning portfolios will appear at the top of the Portfolio Showcase page.

Even if you aren't able to browse the Showcase during the Summer Conference, you can do so afterward. All portfolios will remain on display until September 11th. See last year's post for behind-the-scenes info as well as history behind the SCBWI's Portfolio Showcase

Three Reasons Why You Should Check Out The Showcase (Even If You're Not An Illustrator)

1. To show support for your fellow kidlit creators. Help spread the world about the portfolio showcase by posting about it online and encouraging others to check out the wonderful art. If you especially enjoy an individual's portfolio, post about it and encourage others to check out that person's website. **Note: Never publicly share an illustrator's art online unless you have express permission, especially if the image does not have the artist's name/identifying mark as part of the image.

2. To learn. Especially if you are an up-and-coming children's book illustrator, you can learn a great deal by studying the portfolios of more experienced illustrators in the Showcase.

3. For the joy. A study by neurobiologist Semir Zek showed that that viewing a beautiful work of art can create the same chemical response in the brain as being in love. Also, see this article for more benefits of viewing art (decreased stressed levels! increased empathy! relief from mental exhaustion!).

Above: My own career was jumpstarted by the SCBWI Summer Conference Portfolio Showcase, back in 2010. You can read the full story of what happened here.

Whether or not your portfolio ends up winning an award, however, be assured that your work is being viewed by many in the industry. I've heard many stories of agents and editors contacting illustrators months (sometimes years) after seeing their work in the Showcase.

Now stop reading and go check out the Portfolio Showcase!

Art Directors Panel: Mela Bolinao

Art Directors Panel: The Changing Landscape in Children's Publishing For Illustrators

Q: What is a recent book project that you've enjoyed working on?
A: Mela is specifically an illustrator agent, representing over 60 illustrators from all over the world. The last few projects that were fun to work on were some Little Golden Books, having worked on some sports biographies.

Q: On market trends: Are you seeing any trends?
A: On thinking about the type of projects coming in, Mela is seeing more diverse books/countries of origin but that may be almost ending. There are a lot of graphic novels coming from everybody, and a lot of biographical books to cater to more institutional markets since biographies have no shelf life.

Q: How do you normally find artists?
A: "Honestly, I find them everywhere!" Typically on social media, she follows artists to keep up-to-date with them and their work. She browses directory websites but most of the time, she asks her colleagues or other artists for recommendations/ referrals.  Being in New York, Mela has found artists at school visits when she is invited to galleries. And of course, SCBWI!

Q: On Portfolios: What are some portfolio basics for you and what makes a portfolio stand out?
A:
Portfolio basics:
- Can you draw the human form?

- Body portions: Hands, and feet are extremely important to Mela.

- Body positioning: Making sure they don't look awkward and that they have a spacial voice in the piece.

- Facial expressions: Range of emotions, interaction between characters, can you tell a story with multiple characters within a scene?

Q: How are you receiving your submissions? Digital? Postcards?
A: Both, but most come through as digital queries. She definitely likes postcards even though we have moved to digital more.

Q: On Submissions: Are you accepting? How do you like to receive submissions?
A: Ideally, for Mela, digital works very well. You can send a website! She also loves short bios to give her an idea of who you are, and what you like to do. Cultural background is important as well, since it affects the illustrator's work and perspective. Always looking for new clients!

Q: On working with an illustrator: What other base skills, beyond being an artist, do you wish to see in your clients/potential clients?
A: Mela: Adaptability and openness to growth. As an artist, you cannot be stagnant. Things change every year and artists should evolve as well. If you don't adapt, you can get stuck. Being an illustrator, you have to try new things. You may fail, you might succeed but you have to try. If you stop growing, you're closing off creativity coming into your being.

Q: How often should illustrators update their portfolio?
A: To clarify, what Mela means by growing your portfolio is that you should see what is happening in the industry and incorporate it into your art. Don't change your work drastically but use your style to grow with the industry. You should have a well-rounded portfolio that is living; retire pieces as needed, build upon what speaks to you and your voice, and adapt as the industry grows.

Q: What can artists do while they are developing their portfolio/skills? Other streams of income?
A: If you're developing your portfolio, but are not yet ready, you can work in a creative field so it can give you inspiration and help cultivate work. Surround yourself with things that inspire you and dive into the industry so you can find what works best for you and your style. Keep a thumb on the pulse of what is happening to help you find and know your niche.

Q: How much are agents and editors involved in marketing illustrators?
A: As an illustrator agent, Mela finds that school visits are great, but as an agent, she has nothing to do with marketing. It is the illustrator's responsibility because they have to incorporate it into their life and schedule. Get creative! Definitely promote your books by going to libraries and bookstores, having readings in-person or even, digitally.

SCBWI Summer Conference Portfolio Showcase: Open For Viewing!

The SCBWI Summer Conference Portfolio Showcase is now open for public viewing! According to TeMika Grooms, this year there are 154 portfolios from around the globe, and a "variety of styles and media used to create stellar pieces of art."

Even if you aren't an illustrator, I encourage you to browse some of the amazing art. You can also show your support for your fellow creators by helping to promote this showcase in your social media. When you do, be sure to use the conference hashtag #scbwiSummer24. Gentle reminder: Never scoop and share an illustrator's art in social media unless you have their permission, especially if the image you're sharing does not have their info included.

Speaking of illustrators, isn't Francesca Mahaney's conference art fantastic? Feel free to check out the pre-conference interview with this talented young illustrator about how she was invited to be the official conference illustrator, her creative process, and what kind of illustration work she's currently seeking.

Also, the SCBWI keeps a record of the illustrators who participate in Showcases and refers to the list throughout the year when they are looking for members to do SCBWI-commissioned work.

Curious about the history of the SCBWI Portfolio Showcase? Read this behind-the-scenes post.

As much fun as it is to browse portfolios in person, there are advantages to browsing a virtual portfolio showcase. Here are just a few:

1. You can take your time and enjoy the art from the comfort of your own home.

2. You can search by name or keyword.

3. It's easy to click through and find out more about the illustrator.

After you click on "full submission", click on the Member name to be taking to their SCBWI page.

Have fun browsing! I have a special fondness for the SCBWI Summer Conference Portfolio Showcase because it's the event that jumpstarted my career in children's book illustration.

The Portfolio Showcase Winners will be announced on Saturday.

SCBWI Portfolio Showcase now open for public viewing! (Aug. 4 - Sept.10th, 2023)

[Edited August 8, 2023: Congrats to the Portfolio Showcase winners! See details in our Awards and Wrap Up post. You can also see a round-up summary of all of Team Blog's SCBWI Summer Conference posts, with links.]

The SCBWI Summer Conference Portfolio Showcase is now open for public viewing! Even if you're not an illustrator, I encourage you to browse the amazing art, which will be on display until September 10th. You can also show your support for your fellow creators by helping to promote the Showcase in your social media (be sure to include the conference hashtag #scbwiSummer23). Gentle reminder: Never share an illustrator's art online unless you have their permission, especially if the image you're sharing does not have their info included.

SCBWI Design and Illustration Manager TeMika Grooms was kind enough to answer a few questions for me.

Q. What was your role in this year's Portfolio Showcase?

As the SCBWI Design and Illustration Manager, one of my responsibilities includes logistical planning and implementation of the bi-annual Portfolio Showcases.  It brings me great joy to see the art that SCBWI illustrators are developing for their portfolios.  Many of the submissions demonstrated a unique visual storytelling, technical skill, and distinct personality in the art style presented. I'm looking forward to seeing the next batch of artists in-person at the New York Winter Conference in 2024.

Q. Who were the judges for this year's Showcase?

"Many thanks to our judges Lauren Rille (Art Director, Simon & Schuster) and  Karina Granda (Art Director, Little Brown Books for Young Readers) who reviewed 104 portfolios submitted from illustrators worldwide.  Each participant was required to submit 3 images for review by our judges.  The judges enjoyed seeing the wide variety of art made by SCBWI's illustration members to narrow the selection down to this year's winners.  This is a valuable opportunity to have artwork viewed and discussed by children's book art directors."
