Each year, the SCBWI sponsors four conference scholarships for full-time graduate or undergraduate students studying illustration. (Two for the New York conference, two for the Los Angeles conference)

Many of our SIS winners have gone on to be represented by agents, get illustration work, publish books and win awards.

LA17SCBWI Portfolio Showcase -- and an Only at the SCBWI Summer Conference Moment!

Scenes from the annual portfolio showcase! Honorees will be announced at the morning introduction.

Meanwhile, here's an Only-at-SCBWI moment if I've ever seen one:

Keynote speaker Marvin Terban had us all in stitches this morning. However, this evening, the tables turned when SCBWI LA member Esther Pearl Watson shared the notes she took about his talk -- in the form of a comic!

Marvin was honored, and had to take a photo to keep!

This is the kind of connection that seems to uniquely happen at SCBWI. Love it.

Catch more of the conference highlights this year through blog posts tagged #LA17SCBWI or as-it-happens on Twitter.

Golden Kite Luncheon - Illustrator Mentorship Awards

Really, if you're an illustrator and you're NOT an SCBWI member or attending the LA or NY conference, you are a monkey's uncle. Here's an amazing new opportunity magicked up by the SCBWI Board Illustrator Committee:

The Mentorship Award is presented to a select group of six illustrators participating in the annual Portfolio Showcase, whose publishable work shows great promise and potential. The purpose goes beyond just the selection, in that the Mentorship Program is an intense advance-level portfolio critique that includes both individual reviews with each Mentor, and a culminating critique peer meeting with all Mentors and Mentees. This all will take place during the conference hours.

Mentors this year include: Cecilia Yung, Art Director and VP at Penguin Young Readers; Pat Cummings, Illustrator, Writer, and Instructor at Parsons; Priscilla Burris, National Illustrator Coordinator; David Diaz, Award Winning Illustrator; Bridget Strevens-Marzo, International Illustrator Liason; and Rubin Pfeffer, Agent at East/West Literary Agency.

This year's Mentees are:

Ashley Mims
John Deininger
Andrea Offermann
Debbie Ridpath Ohi
Eliza Wheeler
Kimberly Gee

Let's call this idea FANFREAKINGTASTIC!

SCBWI Illustrator Winners: Check Out Their Work

I didn't have time to post images while live blogging, so I'm excited that I've now scored some art from the winners of both the SCBWI New York Portfolio Exhibition and the Tomie dePaola Award which were given out during the NY conference. (Lin Oliver announced that the Tomie dePaola award will be funded by SCBWI going forward and join the permanent lineup of awards offered by SCBWI. I wasn't supposed to blog this because Tomie didn't know yet. He was filled in during a live phone call broadcast to the conference audience, so now I can tell you.)

If you'd like to see more art from these illustrators, click their names or images to view their online portfolios. Enjoy! And congratulations to these terrific artists.
