Andrea Welch - cont'd 2

A few DO's from Andrea and one DON'T
  • DO use lyrical and evocative language ala Mem Fox
  • DO create characters your readers can relate to -- a character that is 100% good is not a lot of fun...
  • DON'T do bad rhyme

Andrea Welch - cont'd

Here's a picture of some of the books that are out or coming out from Beach Lane Books

They plan on doing about 20 books a year with their list weighted more towards picture books (but chapter books and novels are coming out from them, too)

Andrea Welch - Meet Beach Lane Books/New Imprint, New Opportunities

Beach Lane's location sounds like something Marla Frazee might illustrate: a little studio on a flowered filled lane a block from the beach in La Jolla, CA.

Andrea Welch, editor there, has always had a love of children's books. While working at a small bookstore in college, Andrea made herself the unofficial 'manager' of the children's book section allowing her to soak up titles old and new.

She spent her first 8 years in the industry at Harcourt under Allyn Johnston (who'd been at Harcourt for 22 years) and both now make up Simon & Schuster's new West Coast imprint.

Allyn Johnston - Leave Me Alone With a Latte: One Editor's Picture Book Revision Process

It all starts with Allyn, sitting in a coffee shop, with an illustrator's book dummy and a giant stack of Post-its.

Allyn took us through the dummy revision of Cynthia Rylant and Lauren Stringer's SCARECROW page by page. Allyn writes her editorial comments on the Post-its which then get slapped to the dummy spread they reference.

Allyn showed many examples of Lois Ehlert's books and dummies -- from first sketch to final book. Did you know that Lois Ehlert does elaborate color dummies for each book -- as many as TEN or TWELVE dummies?!? Amazing.

My favorite line from Allyn:

A great example of one of the other roles an editor has it to believe in what you [the author/the illustrator] are doing... [to see that] fragment of your idea and go with you on that...To not panic and be able to ask calm questions...

Which relates to my favorite line from Andrea Welch (who came up to answer questions with Allyn):

Sometimes it is just a tiny sentence in a submission that captures our attention... Two words that make us want to work on something...
